Reason for question

We want to know who has control of their energy procurement to understand whether organisations have the power to change energy suppliers or switch tariffs to more sustainable ones.

Reason for question

This question combines two previous questions asking about energy supply and renewable energy generation into one question. We will use this question to understand the proportion of organisations using renewable energy tariffs and the barriers to using them. Combined with 2.3 it will give a good picture of energy sources in the cultural sector.

With the publication of the Buildings (Heating and Energy Performance) and Heat Networks (Scotland) Bill in the coming year this question will demonstrate how aligned the Scottish cultural sector is to its aims so we can advocate for further support to decarbonise heat in cultural buildings.

We are asking for the consumption from each energy/water source that your organisation has used in the reporting period. You should enter the value for each source in the box provided, taking note of the units. The sources we ask for are:

• Electricity in kWh (as a number)
• Gas in kWh (as a number)
• Water in cubic metres (as a number)
• LPG in litres (as a number)
• Fuel oil in litres (as a number)
• Diesel (for generators) in litres (as a number)
• Cooking oil as fuel in litres (as a number)
• Biomass in kWh (as a number)
• Coal in kg (as a number)
• Wood logs in kg (as a number)

If your organisation owns/operates its building and pays an energy supplier directly for its energy and water, please use meter readings or information included in bills to provide your organisation’s energy and water consumption.

If your organisation rents its main premises finding out how much energy and water you are consuming can be a bit more complicated. We recommend you try the following (in this order):

1. Speak with your landlord about estimating your energy consumption based on a ratio from your organisation’s floor area in the context of the whole building.
2. If your landlord provides you with a bill for your energy consumption, use this as a basis to estimate.
3. Use our tenant energy toolbox to calculate an estimate from staff numbers, office size and equipment use.

Reason for question

Measuring and monitoring all your emissions’ sources is the first step to understanding and managing them. This question requires you to do just that so that you have the relevant data required to inform your carbon management plan.

Emissions from electricity are classed as Scope 2 emissions under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol whilst the burning of gas and other fuels are classed as Scope 1. Find out more about emissions classification on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol website.

Calculation methodology

Once we receive these figures, we multiply them by the UK government emissions factor for each source for 2025/26 to get the kgCO2e value. This is calculated automatically for you in the survey.

Reason for question

We encourage all organisations to report energy and water consumption data, even if it is an estimate generated using one of our estimation tools. Therefore, if an organisation is unable to provide this information, we would like to understand what we can do to enable them to provide this data next year.

Reason for question

This answer gives us an idea of the accuracy of the data since exact figures taken from meter readings or utility bills are more accurate than estimations using the tenant energy toolbox. This also indicates how we should continue to support you to improve data collection and reporting processes.
