An interactive community of Scottish cultural organisations
Initiated by Creative Carbon Scotland, as we were then known, and Festivals Edinburgh in 2013, the free-to-join Green Arts Initiative supports Scottish arts and cultural organisations to reduce their impact on the climate and environment, and to be at the forefront of creating a sustainable future for our sector and beyond.
How it works
The Green Arts Initiative is a proactive network that aims to build and maintain a Scottish green arts community. Run by Culture for Climate Scotland, with oversight and support from a steering group of Green Arts members, it operates by:
Supporting the sharing of relevant knowledge, ideas and experiences.
Enhancing the sustainability competencies of arts organisations across the country.
Members are encouraged to use the Green Arts Initiative branding on their publicity online to demonstrate their commitment to developing a greener arts sector throughout Scotland.
Who is eligible to join?
The Green Arts Initiative focuses on providing support for cultural organisations based in Scotland. Both professional and community organisations are welcome to join.
All organisations that join the network nominate a member of staff as their green champion, who is the main point of contact within the Green Arts Initiative. They also make the following two commitments:
We will strive to improve our environmental efforts each year.
We will complete the annual feedback form on the environmental action we’ve taken each year.
Culture for Climate Scotland is starting to explore how we can also provide support to individual artists and freelancers in the cultural sector. For now, individuals are invited to subscribe to the CCS newsletter to keep up to date with these developments. If you are an individual maker of crafts, the Green Craft Initiative will provide the most relevant resources for your work.
The network is free to join.
The Green Arts Charter
We launched the Green Arts Charter in November 2023 to enable collective action and establish shared goals and pledges between members of the Green Arts Initiative.
We invite all members to commit to the charter’s four pledges and use the framework for actions to attain your sustainability goals and deliver the climate action needed to achieve transformational change in the sector.
Green Arts Initiative members are encouraged to join our member’s platform, GAI Mighty Network. You can read our ‘Welcome to the Green Arts Initiative Network‘ post and share your sustainability news, knowledge or projects with members. We encourage you to use this platform to connect with other organisations using the space.
