Sustainable Screen website launches to support Scottish film & TV production

A new practical website , Sustainable Screen, launches to help screen professionals reduce their environmental impact and embed greener practices across productions.

Scotland is already over halfway to its target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2045, placing it ahead of the wider UK. However, the film & TV sector remains a significant contributor to carbon emissions. The new Sustainable Screen website will help support productions to take both immediate and long-term action.

Sustainable Screen website

Sustainable Screen offers a comprehensive roadmap tailored to each department, featuring a range of practical actions categorised as ‘easy wins’, ‘strong wins’ and ‘game changers’. The website also includes dedicated guidance on sourcing sustainable suppliers and information on how productions can gain certification.

The website collates knowledge and research with on-the-ground experience and expertise. Culture for Climate Scotland’s Senior Green Arts and Screen Officer, Romane Boyer and Screen Sustainability Manager, Sara Hamilton created the guidance, with web design studio Maraid Design developing the content into an accessible, low-carbon website.

Sara Hamilton, Screen Sustainability Manager at Culture for Climate Scotland, says:

‘I’m excited for TV & film crew to have this website, and for Romane and I to support them with embedding environmental sustainability within their departments. These practices will become business as usual one day, but we’re currently in a transition phase and need everybody’s help to keep moving forward.’

Sustainable Screen website is supported and funded by a range of key industry partners, including Creative Scotland, Screen Scotland, BECTU Vision, Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise, and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

David Smith, Director of Screen at Screen Scotland says:

‘The Climate Emergency is one of the biggest global challenges, but Scotland is a world leader in renewable energy and so much important work is already being done to improve working practices across film and TV. Sustainable Screen is a vital step forward in signposting for our industry and we are committed to working with Culture for Climate Scotland to further support sustainable practices being adopted right across production.’

By equipping film & TV professionals with the tools and knowledge they need, Sustainable Screen aims to drive lasting change across the industry and support Scotland’s journey toward a more sustainable future.
