Fair Work statement
Culture for Climate Scotland (CCS) is committed to the Scottish Government’s Fair Work First policy.
We are an accredited member of the Good Business Charter and the Living Wage Foundation. We work hard to be an organisation that engages employees in what we do and supports them through training and development opportunities. We promote positive approaches to make CCS a flexible and dynamic place to work.
We review our policies and procedures at least annually to ensure that they remain current and reflect changes in legislation. As an organisation we continue to strive to improve and develop wherever possible so that we can support our team in their work.
Effective voice
CCS believes in empowering employees’ voices and establishes this through many avenues of engagement and participation including regular meetings with line managers and between programme teams, leadership and organisation-wide. Employees are also encouraged to join an independent trade union if they so wish.
Opportunity
CCS runs a fair and transparent recruitment process, documented in our recruitment procedure, with all job opportunities shared and circulated to and via our staff team, newsletter and advertised in a range of external locations to reach as wide a demographic as possible. Following any recruitment, we look for areas where improvements can be made, and our procedures are updated accordingly.
CCS invests annually in training for all staff focusing on organisational priorities alongside individual personal development.
In line with our board policy, CCS reviews the skills of our trustees and uses this information to determine any gaps in their skills, experience and representation. Recruitment can take a variety of routes to address any identified gaps and to reach potential new trustees.
Security
CCS offers meaningful work that provides a reliable income with all contracts issued on hour-based rates. CCS is a Living Wage accredited employer and does not use or issue zero-hour contracts.
CCS has a structure and salary policy that offers clarity on job profiles, the expectations in these roles and the remuneration level. These levels are approved by the board and provide parity across the organisation for all staff to ensure equal pay is observed.
The minimum salary level offered by CCS is the real Living Wage for an apprentice-level role and all other roles are remunerated above this. Any freelance artists undertaking project delivery are paid in accordance with Scottish Artists Union rates.
Fulfilment
CCS promotes fulfilment at work through our heath and wellbeing policy and wellness action plans. We schedule team events three times annually and encourage engagement and support of team members’ wider activities. We invest in professional development for employees as well as offering secondment and career break opportunities.
As detailed in our health and wellbeing policy, CCS offers flexible working to all staff and we work together with individuals to find the right balance between work and personal life.
Respect
CCS has equality, diversity and inclusion policies in place and is committed to having a workplace free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and/or victimisation. Staff are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity at work and have a personal responsibility for ensuring that they treat others the way they expect to be treated themselves. Any acts of bullying, harassment, victimisation and/or unlawful discrimination are dealt with as misconduct under the organisation’s grievance and disciplinary procedures.
CCS also operates a safe working statement for our events and activities to ensure that these principles are applied and shared with all those engaging with us and our partners at events and activities.
We take our legal responsibilities towards health and safety very seriously and our practices are embedded in our health and safety policy to ensure all legislative requirements are met.
In our work, we acknowledge climate justice, where those who are worst affected by climate change are the poorer and more disadvantaged who generally have contributed least to the greenhouse gas emissions that cause it. We strive to apply climate justice principles to all our work, aiming to strengthen the capabilities of people and communities to participate fully and effectively in discussion and debate around climate change. We believe this can also strengthen communities and build social capital amongst other outcomes.
