Green Arts Charter: One year on

A year after launching the charter, we published this report summarising the progress of 65 signatories and where further support is needed by Scottish cultural organisations on their sustainability journeys.
‘I saw the development of a Green Arts Charter as proactive, positive action to help accelerate the decarbonisation of the cultural sector.’
Cath du Preez, cohort member and Head of Operations at The Barn
The report details the types of organisations that have signed the charter, which actions they feel most confident about and areas for us to provide further support, training and workshops to upskill organisations. In total, the organisations committed to an impressive 1414 actions.
The variety of goals signatories chose is encouraging and we noted three areas of focus for the charter’s development in 2025: engaging with senior leadership, adaptation and working with local communities.
‘Taking the time to select the actions that felt most relevant to our organisation gave us a welcome confidence boost. Thanks to the charter, I have a far stronger sense of where we are, where we want to be and, most importantly, how to get there.’
Kirsten MacQuarrie, Sector Development Manager and Green Champion at CILIPS
Council endorsement
A milestone for us in 2024 was receiving the City of Edinburgh Council’s endorsement of the charter in its funding criteria for cultural organisations.
